Club HIstory

Wanderers Rugby Football Club joined the Newcastle Rugby Union (NRU) premiership in 1925.
Founded by a small yet enthusiastic group of players and administrators, many of whom had played schoolboy rugby with either Newcastle Boys' High or private colleges in Sydney, the majority of the club's founding members had played the previous season under the banner of the GPS Old Boys. While few details are available about why the name was changed, it is reasonable to assume that "Wanderers" was deemed more appropriate because many of the club's players had been recruited from a variety of schools.

Wanderers RFC stopped playing in 1939 due to outbreak of WWII and reformed in 1941. The reformed club consisted of players of similar background to the original founders and adopted the original jersey design of Sky Blue with Royal Blue hoops but, due to a shortage of supplies caused by the war, only plain blue guernseys were available.
Wanderers members are credited with forming junior teams in the late 1940’s that ultimately led to the establishment of junior rugby in the Newcastle region.  The Wanderers Junior Club was established in 1945 and is recognised as a leading junior rugby club in the Newcastle and Hunter region.
The Club established a home ground in Broadmeadow at what is known as Wanderers Park. In the late 1970’s the Club agreed to leave Wanderers Park and has occupied National Park No 2 Sports Ground as their home ground since 1980. Lights were erected on the ground in the following years and a Club House constructed in 1992.
The Club commenced an international touring regime in 1993 for existing and past playing members that continued in 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010.
Wanderers Women’s Rugby was established as part of our senior Rugby operation in 2000. The women’s team has been consistent in recruiting to maintain a quality of rugby and achieved results consistent with the high expectations of Wanderers. Undoubtedly the most successful women's rugby Club, we have achieved: 17 Grand Finals, 11 Minor Premierships, 9 Major Premierships & are the only Club to achieve 3 consecutive Women's Premierships.
Wanderers promotes and supports the study and practice of the latest methods of rugby coaching and training. This provides an environment for players to develop and improve the quality of their rugby consistent with their playing ambitions. We compete in junior and senior men’s and women’s competitions within the Newcastle and Hunter region. Quality social events are staged throughout the year for the benefit and enjoyment of Club members and local rugby enthusiasts.
Wanderers RFC incorporates:
  • Wanderers RFC Juniors - for players aged under 18 years
  • Wanderers Academy - for transition of players U16 to U20 into senior rugby
  • Wanderers Rugby Community - for past players and Wanderers supporters
