why we tour
The Wanderers ‘train and play’ tour programme is unique in that it offers our travelling team the combination of learning from some of the best coaches through specialised training sessions, being challenged by opponents from well-drilled & experienced teams; in addition to benefiting from the cultural experience of travelling.
Experiencing different cultures through touring has always been an integral part of rugby and is an important contribution to a young player’s rugby development and personal character building.
Experiencing different cultures through touring has always been an integral part of rugby and is an important contribution to a young player’s rugby development and personal character building.
Touring activities may push players outside their comfort zone and provide some challenges to overcome. These team building activities will provide players with opportunities to develop skills in communication, team building, problem solving and quick decision making necessary to succeed in leadership roles of all types. They will learn to interact respectfully with all levels of authority from teammates, to coaches and referees, and with the opposing team. Tours also reinforce those great rugby attributes of humility, respect and good sportsmanship as players deal with the ups and downs of winning and losing.
Some of the activities from past Tours have included:
VELOCITY VALLEY
Velocity Valley is Rotorua’s home of speed and adrenaline. The only place where you can sample all of New Zealand’s favourite adventure activities in one place. Swoop - a giant swing where you nose-dive headfirst to the ground from 40 metres high, Freefall - experience the thrill of skydiving, Agrojet -high speed jet boating in an enclosed raceway, Schweeb racer - human powered monorail where you race against a teammate. HOT POOLS Soothing & nourishing, the iconic geothermal bathing experience provides access to both acidic and alkaline natural mineral springs. Polynesian Spa’s geothermal hot mineral waters are sourced from two natural springs and feed into 28 hot mineral pools. The slightly acidic waters relieve tired muscles, aches and pains while the alkaline waters nourish the skin. |
LUGE AND GONDOLA Luge and gondola mix beautiful vistas with exciting competition. Race down the advanced track or take it more slowly on the scenic route. The part go-cart, part toboggan is gravity fuelled with full rider control over speed and direction using a unique braking and steering system. Pull back on the handlebars to slow down or stop, release slightly to accelerate and enjoy the ride. MAORI VILLAGE Te Puia spans 70 hectares within the historic Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, on the edge of Rotorua. It is home to the world famous Pōhutu geyser, mud pools, hot springs and silica formations. Also the native Kiwi bird and the national schools of wood carving, weaving, stone and bone carving. DUCK TOUR Many people who visit Rotorua don’t get to see the lakes district due to lack of transportation or simply just not knowing where to go. The Rotorua Ducks pride themselves on being able to see this spectacular area from land and lake on New Zealand’s only genuine WW2 amphibious landing crafts |
